Mura Kosker Sorority celebrated National Children’s Day last Friday with community, stakeholders and families on Waibene (Thursday Island).
The festivities at ANZAC Park featured a sausage sizzle, kid-friendly games, crafts and pop-up stalls with beading and weaving workshops. There was also a special playgroup session held for mums, dads, and bubs who shared positive parenting tips and skills.
This year’s National Children’s Day theme was ‘Strong in Culture, Stronger Together’ and Mura Kosker Sorority CEO Aletia Twist said family and community strength was definitely on display.
“We were thrilled to see so many people come together to celebrate our children,” Ms Twist said.
“A big thanks to our stakeholders for making this event possible: CEQ, DTATSIPC&A, Torres Health, Wakai Waian Healing, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, TSIMA, DCSSD, TSRA, Loban Marine, Biosecurity, Qld Child & Maternal Health, James Cook University, QPS, QFES, MGNM – GBK, PKA, Gab Titui Cultural Centre and TSRA.”
“At Mura Kosker, we focus on empowering our children and their families to be strong in identity and culture,” Ms Twist added.
“The day was a resounding success, with families and our leaders participating in activities.”
Local Mayors from Torres Shire Council and Torres Strait Island Regional Council attended and joined the Children in some fun activities.
Torres Shire Mayor Elsie Seriat shared highlights on Facebook:
