Healing Foundation Workshop

Mura Kosker Sorority and the Healing Foundation have hosted workshops across the Torres Strait to establish key relationships within communities and plan upcoming Healing Forums.

These workshops have visited Saibai, Dauan, Iama, Masig, Ngarupai and the most recent workshop was held in the Kiriri community in February 2020.

The Kiriri workshop was well-attended by elders, leaders and vital community groups. The safe space allowed individuals to express their thoughts, feelings and together they have established a reference group that will plan and determine the terms of reference, and best representation for the future Healing Foundation Community Forums.

Mura Kosker Sorority Board President Mrs Regina Turner attended the Kiriri workshop and expressed the importance of bringing communities into such planning initiatives.

“Mura Kosker Sorority and the Healing Foundation’s partnership started in 2017. Together, we implement the Torres Strait and Kaurareg Aboriginal People’s Healing Strategy which was developed by families across Zenadth Kes,” Mrs Turner said.

The Healing Foundation is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that works with communities affected by the forced removal of children from their families or what we now call the ‘Stolen Generation’.

“The key focus areas addressed are child safety and well-being, community safety, spiritual healing, self-determination, leadership and governance,” Mrs Turner shared.

Mura Kosker Sorority and the Healing Foundation have been holding workshops to encourage affected families to share their stories, identify healing needs and establish ways to achieve healing.

“These efforts are in line with Mura Kosker Sorority’s five-year strategic plan wherein we will help support and provide services to our Torres Strait and Aboriginal families,” Mrs Turner stated.
