What does Domestic & Family Violence look like?

Domestic and Family Violence occurs when one person in any type of relationship uses violent and/or abuse tactics to maintain power and control over the other person in a relationship. People who experience these acts of abuse or violence often feel fearful and unsafe.

Domestic violence can begin small with verbal abuse and matters can escalate into physical violence and other forms of domestic & family violence.

Where does Domestic & Family Violence happen?

It can happen anywhere. At anytime. However, the most prominent place is at home. Disallowing a partner to see family, monitoring spending habits and restricting the practice of religious beliefs are all acts of domestic violence.

Research shows that if a child is the victim of violence, parents and step-parents are most likely to be the perpetrators. Children and young people are also at risk of witnessing violence between other family members.
