The Child and Family Support Service at Mura Kosker Sorority Incorporated have donated 50 ‘back to school’ packs for prep students starting their first academic year.

Each pack includes a lunch box, water bottle, mini magnetic whiteboard, sharpener, eraser, glue sticks, pencil case, colouring-in pencils and felt pens, library bag and scrapbook.

Program Coordinator, Mr Daniel Aitken said some packs will be available for collection on Thursday Island and Horn Island and that Outer Island families can contact him to arrange for their packs to be sent to them directly.

“Parents can collect packs from Miss Rizah Nona at the Thursday Island Tagai State School Campus, Mrs Sarah Barsah at the Horn Island Tagai State School Campus, and Mrs Tari Sagigi at the Thursday Island Sacred Heart Campus,” he said.

“Prep students need essential supplies for a successful start to their educational journey.”

Mura Kosker Sorority Chief Executive Officer, Ms Aletia Twist said the initiative aims to help relieve parents of some of the financial costs involved with sending their children to school.

“The start of the school year is always a tough time on parents, following the financial impacts of Christmas and school holidays,” she said.

“Mura Kosker Sorority Incorporated is aware of the high cost of living for families across the region and provides support wherever we can.

“At the Buai Mudh Community Neighbourhood Centre, we have pre-loved clothes, non-perishable goods, toys, and other items generously donated from the community, and we welcome families to come in and collect what they need.

“We also facilitate a playgroup program and offer computer and printing services as part of Mura Kosker Sorority’s commitment to helping our communities and families across our region,” Ms Twist said.

The ‘back to school’ packs will be available from Thursday, 18 January 2024 and parents can contact Mr Daniel Aitken for more information on 0477 979 771.
